About Avos

Did you know there are many different types of Avocados?

In this photo there are 4 different types of Avocados pictured.

Here’s a bit about each (from left to right):

Zutano

Zutano is a large pear shaped avocado. It has a thin skin, this is why you do not see it in your usual retail stores as it can damage easy during transport. It is ripe approximately 7-10 days after harvest. The taste is smooth, very creamy and mild perfect for guacamole. Because of the thin skin this avocado can be easily peeled instead of scooped out.

Reed

Reed is large and oval shaped with smooth skin. Similar to Zutano it has a thin skin and is unsuitable for export. It is more watery than the standard Hass Avocado making it creamy and easy to mash into a dip. Reed avocadoes don’t go brown and are instead eaten green once soft.

Fuerte

Fuerte are medium sized pear shaped avocadoes that also stay green and have a rough thick skin. They are known to have a sweeter and more fruity flavour. They are easy to peel and have yellow flesh.

Hass

Hass is the most well known Avocado type. Hass is good for export because of its thick skin. It is also popular because it goes brown when it is ripe so consumers can tell when they are ready unlike many of the other Avocado types which stay green. Hass has a more thicker meaty texture with a nutty, creamy flavour.
